Report: PS4 more powerful than next Xbox but with less RAMDVDBack23 @ Jan 18, 2013 21:23 | 38 comments
The devs say they were briefed at CES on the final hardware specs of the consoles, which are widely expected to launch this holiday season.
On the other end, the Xbox will have 8GB of RAM, compared to 4GB of system RAM for the PS4.
Both machines will be able to read up to 100GB Blu-ray discs, meaning capacity for games on a single disc should not be an issue for many years to come.
Of course, some out of context specs cannot compare to real life system performance. Adds Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry: "The rumours are certainly plausible, but we're essentially looking at singular components in isolation and not in context of the system as a whole. The PlayStation 3 has a graphics core that is basically an entire generation behind that in the Xbox 360, yet no one can deny that it's Sony's first party games that have led the way in the visual arts."
Each company is expected to have their own event in the coming months to announce the consoles. |

Comment by: scorpNZ (Jan 21, 2013 02:12) i think this sums it up best which to me supports bozobobs theory of ram relativity :P ,way i see it more ram & faster is what we want & will need, actually better make that what you need since its unlikely i'll be buying another console ever again

Comment by: Bozobub (Jan 21, 2013 03:27) Yeah, scorpNZ, that's pretty much what I'm getting at. Thanks for the links, btw, they made for some interesting reading.

Comment by: Juke_Box (Jan 21, 2013 11:10) I believe what it all boils down to is that the Sony Fanboys are jealous that the Xbox will have more ram. Ram is fairly cheap. Why not give the devs what they are asking for? I'm pretty sure the higher end developers will still produce a good product. Bioware, 2K, Etc. Their games are pretty reliable.

Comment by: TheCheeseGoat (Jan 21, 2013 11:10) Seems bizarre you are all discussing the ram size, speed etc… of a console; I can assume that you were all once pc gamers, where you were are to fix said problems with a quick upgrade, without the risk of being prosecuted / imprisoned...

Comment by: Bozobub (Jan 21, 2013 16:37) You can buy a relatively powerful gaming PC rig for under $500, these days. If the Ouya can sell for $99 and have 1 GB RAM, they can put more RAM in a $300 console.

Comment by: dali (Jan 21, 2013 22:53) I never was one of those defending the undefendable lack of RAM of previous generations of consoles. I am now, because I think that, at last, they are starting to put some serious amount of memory on them.

Comment by: DXR88 (Jan 23, 2013 09:49) More ram is good, i'm sick of the recycled texture's in console games. wonder what excuse will be next, GPU limitations. |
Comment by: ddaring (Jan 25, 2013 16:45) Originally posted by dali: This makes about as much sense as the old saying that noone will ever need more than 640k of ram. The more memory you have the more environment you can display. Sloppy code can obviously eat more memory, however now a days most of the memory goes to displaying more characters, textures, details, and allowing for preload to reduce lag or delay at zone points.

Comment by: Interestx (Jan 25, 2013 22:53) I wonder if the early reports are true.

Comment by: Bozobub (Jan 26, 2013 03:16) I seriously doubt, dali, that this will be the last generation of consoles, but I DO agree, however, that they will change drastically. I believe that systems like the "Ouya" are a strong indicator of the future of console gaming. |

Comment by: Bozobub (Jan 28, 2013 21:58) Frankly, the new XBox has fast enough RAM to run any current game, as well as many conceivable future games, and enough of it to run the giant open worlds that gamers want. While the PS4's RAM may be faster, you simply cannot cram as much information into it. |
Comment by: Jemborg (Jan 29, 2013 06:13) Originally posted by Interestx: Yeah it will I'm sure.

Comment by: dali (Jan 29, 2013 11:52) These latest posts summarize what I was trying to say: The amount of RAM, and speed as well, will be enough for a certain period of time (in the beginning, much more than enough, given the specs of current consoles). When it's not, it will be time for a replacement, like it has always been. That's their life cycle. Trash the old one, buy the new one. Their makers are businesses, and they want to keep on selling.

Comment by: Interestx (Jan 29, 2013 16:18) The one thing I have seen which does not bode well for PS4 v Xbox 720 is that (if reports are true) it will have a GPU one generation behind that of the Xbox 720.
